Notifications and automation rules
How NizamOS turns events into in-app, email and text notifications, how to edit automation rules, and how to run the automation.
On this page
Notifications tell people when something needs them, such as a task coming due or a new signup. Every notification starts as an event, an automation rule decides who gets a message and what it says, and the message is delivered in the app, by email or by text message.
On every plan#
- Everyone has a notification bell in NizamOS. Unread alerts appear there.
- On the Free plan, admins get an in-app alert whenever someone completes a signup link. The bell's View all notifications opens your own alert history.
- Automatic reminders and alerts for programs, committees, volunteers and Madrasa, and email and text messages, come with the Core plan.
The Notifications page (Core and Complete)#
Open Notifications. You'll see Unread, Pending, Failed and In history counts and two tabs:
- My inbox — your own in-app messages. Choose Mark as read or Mark all as read.
- All notifications — what has been sent across your organization, filtered by Status, Channel and Event. A Pending message can be cancelled with Cancel; a Failed one can usually be sent again with Retry.
Automation rules#
Admins choose Automation rules to see the rules your organization starts with. Each rule watches one kind of event, such as Task due, Task overdue, Meeting availability needed, Volunteer invited, Request understaffed, Consecutive absences detected or a program session approaching.
Edit or create a rule
- Choose Edit on a rule, or New rule.
- Set the Name, Trigger: event, Timing (from As soon as it happens to 7 days before) and Channel (In-App, Email or SMS).
- Under Action: create notification for, choose who receives it, such as The person it is about, Committee lead or Every Organization Admin/Super Admin.
- Write the Subject and Message. You can use the placeholders listed under the trigger, such as
{{recipient}},{{task}}or{{due_date}}. - Choose Save rule.
Use Turn on and Turn off instead of deleting a rule; its history stays with the notifications it already created. Turning on an SMS rule asks you to confirm, because each text is charged to your SMS credit.
Run the automation#
Admins choose Run automation on the Notifications page. NizamOS checks for events that are due, applies the active rules, and delivers what has come due. The page then shows how many events were checked and how many notifications were created, delivered, waiting or failed.
Good to know#
- Date-based reminders (task due, session approaching and so on) are found when someone runs the automation; they are not scheduled on their own.
- Email and text messages wait as Pending until email or texting is set up for your organization. See Email and SMS delivery settings.
- Texts go only to people who agreed to receive them. See SMS consent and opt-out.
- On a lower plan, rules above your plan are kept but don't send anything until you upgrade.
- Messages not sending? See Email or SMS notifications not sending.
